I first started having acne problems in eighth grade, when I was about 14. All of a sudden I went from like this perfect little kid face to a nightmare of tiny bumps all over my forehead. And you couldn't really do anything about them. Makeup can't cover that stuff. After that I went through a stage of having huge whiteheads. And then another stage where I had big, red bumps under my skin.
High school is hard in itself. Kids can be mean to each other, and bad skin is such an easy thing to pick on somebody for. Obviously, I got teased about my bad skin. And I'll always remember this very embarrassing situation. I had a huge crush on this guy, and I had a giant pimple right here on my nose. He told me I looked like Rudolph. Needless to say, I didn't have a crush on him anymore. But, I was embarrassed and sad. Even now, so many years later, it's still embarrassing.
I went to the dermatologist about my acne problems several times. It was very expensive. And it was frustrating because I had to choose whether I wanted to spend all that money on something that seemed like it wasn't a necessity at the time. But then again, I felt like it was a necessity because otherwise I wanted to hide my face all day.
The medicines I tried really dried out my skin. Sometimes it was painful and I became very sensitive to the sun. That's something I'm not used to. My skin is normally fine in the sun. The medicines basically took away one problem, but added more.
But then I saw a Proactiv commercial. The price of it was a lot lower than what I was spending on prescription medicine so I thought: what have I got to lose? There's a money-back guarantee. Worst case scenario, I try it and if it doesn't work, I'll go get my other prescription filled. Thankfully, Proactiv worked really well, and I've been using it ever since.
I was actually very surprised at how quickly Proactiv started to work. In one week I really noticed a difference. Every single week it got better. And I didn't get the dry skin that I had with the other prescriptions. Plus, not only was my acne going away, my skin was being renewed. It was like skin I'd never seen before—it was really healthy and radiant. I was just looking to get rid of the pimples, and Proactiv gave me the bonus of glowing skin.
I love the Oil-Free Moisture because, not only is it great for moisturizing my skin before I put on makeup, it also has SPF, so that's good for you, too.
I use the Daily Oil Control when I know I'm going to have a long day on set. Between takes, they always powder our noses and foreheads. By the end of the day, it can really get caked on. So the Daily Oil Control helps cut back the oil in my T-zone so I don't need as many touch-ups throughout the day.
I've been using Proactiv for about four years now. I started a year before I came on the show. About a year into my show, I got too confident about my skin and figured I must have grown out of my teenage acne, so I stopped using Proactiv. But after just a couple of weeks one of the makeup ladies said my skin looked different–she'd never seen it like that before. She wondered if they'd done anything wrong. I realized it was me that did something wrong–I stopped using Proactiv! I immediately got on the phone and renewed my order.
It's always embarrassing to have a breakout, but imagine being on a soap. They zoom in so close on your face. You can try and hide a breakout as much as you want–we have very talented people doing our makeup–but if you come in with a huge breakout, there's not a lot you can do to cover it. And it's really embarrassing because you can go on the Internet and see people talking about your breakout. It hurts, as an actress. I want my work to be about my work. I don't want it to be about my skin.
I've turned a lot of people onto Proactiv. After people hear I'm doing this campaign they say: "Oh, you have great skin. You don't really use Proactiv." And I'm like, "Are you kidding me? You didn't know me in high school. I've used Proactiv for years." I'm so passionate about Proactiv because it changed my skin completely. And once something really affects you like that, you can't help but want to share it with everyone else.
I am most thankful to Proactiv because now my skin looks great without makeup. On my days off, I don't like to wear makeup because I wear so much at work. My skin still looks great with nothing on. It's smooth, it's radiant. I wouldn't trade it for the world. And guys always think you look the prettiest when you don't have makeup on. That wasn't true with me before, but now it is. When I'm all natural or just going to the gym, I'm still confident because having great skin makes me feel radiant inside and out.
